Privacy Policy: Data Use and Visitor Rights
How this archive collects, uses, and safeguards the information generated when you visit, contact us, or subscribe.
Last revised: 12 June 2024
Overview
The Artemis Transat is a public archive documenting offshore racing across the IMOCA 60 and Class 40 fleets. Like any site that runs on a live server, it leaves a wake of technical records as visitors come and go. This policy exists to set out plainly what those records contain, why they are kept, and what control you hold over them.
We have tried to keep the language readable rather than legalistic. Where a practice is still planned rather than active, we say so, because nothing here should imply a capability the site does not yet use.
Information Collected
Two kinds of data reach us. The first is automatic; the second only arrives when you choose to send it.
Technical logs
Every request to the server is recorded in standard access logs. These capture your IP address, the browser and device you used, the pages you visited, and the time of the request. None of this is unusual—it is the baseline of how web servers operate, but it is information about you, so it belongs in this document.
Contact submissions
When you write to us through the Contact form, we retain whatever you put in the message and the address you ask us to reply to. We do not need anything beyond that, and we do not ask for it.
Subscription inputs
If you sign up for updates, your email address and the date of your sign-up are stored so we can send what you requested. That is the full extent of the subscription record.
Cookies and Tracking
Cookies do different jobs, and lumping them together obscures more than it explains. Here is the breakdown.
Essential
These keep the site working and remember your consent choices. Without them the pages cannot function, so they are not optional.
Analytics
These help us understand traffic patterns and how visitors move through the archive. They inform editorial decisions about which fleets and ports draw attention.
Advertising
Not currently in use. We mention them because personalised advertising cookies may be introduced later, and we would rather flag the possibility now than surprise you with it.
Managing cookies in your browser
Every major browser lets you review, block, or delete cookies from its settings menu—usually under privacy or site data. Blocking essential cookies may break parts of the site; blocking analytics and advertising cookies will not. The choice sits with you, and your browser is the place to exercise it.
External Services
A site does not run in isolation. A handful of third parties touch your data in the course of delivering pages and measuring how they perform.
Analytics is handled through a standard web measurement platform, with additional tools planned as the archive grows. Advertising networks are not yet integrated, though that integration is anticipated. Hosting and content delivery are provided by infrastructure partners whose servers store the site files and distribute them efficiently to visitors around the world.
Each of these providers operates under its own privacy terms. Where we add or change a service, the relevant entry here is updated to match.
Purposes of Processing
We process data for three purposes, and only these.
- Site improvement and maintenance. Logs and analytics tell us where pages load slowly or where navigation stalls, which guides repairs and refinements.
- Performance monitoring. Aggregate traffic figures show which sections of the archive earn sustained interest, helping us prioritise editorial work.
- Contact and communication. Messages and subscription details exist so we can reply to you and send what you asked for—nothing more.
We do not sell personal data, and we do not repurpose contact details for unrelated marketing.
Your Rights
You hold several rights over the data we keep, and we aim to honour them without friction.
Access
You may ask what data we hold about you and receive a copy of it.
Deletion
You may request that we erase your contact or subscription records.
Opt-out
You may decline analytics and advertising tracking through your browser or consent settings.
Make a request
Reach us through the Contact page to exercise any of the above.
Storage and Deletion
Technical logs are retained for a limited operational window and then rotated out as new logs replace them. Contact messages are kept only as long as the conversation requires, and subscription records persist until you unsubscribe or ask for removal.
When you request deletion, we locate the relevant records and remove them from active systems. Some traces may linger briefly in routine backups before those backups cycle out, but they are not used for any further purpose in the meantime.
Revisions to This Policy
This policy will change as the site adds services or adjusts its practices. When that happens, we update the revision date at the top of this page and post the amended text here. Material changes are noted prominently rather than slipped in quietly.
